Pokémon, a name that is a conflation of Pocket Monsters, in its modern form is a trading card game derived from the video games of Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori that became the highest-grossing media franchise ever. At its most fundamental level, it is also a system of cataloguing and control. The Pokédex, introduced in the first-generation games and present throughout the franchise, functions as an exhaustive encyclopaedia of species. Each entry contains essential information: the creature’s type, its stats, its moves, its evolutions, its habitat. And like the Goetia, the Pokédex is not merely descriptive. It is tied to a system of capture and command. One does not simply observe a Pokémon in the wild. You catch it. You bind it, if you will, into a pokéball, a device that contains and constrains the creature’s form.
Explore this modern phenomena in relatikonship to magick, in the same way as Chaos Magicians and others used the works of H.P.Lovecraft or other cultural tropes.
